There was actually an article about Marines learning languages in my local paper recently (I live in a military town). One picture showed a group of soldiers sitting around a small table in what looked like a preschool classroom. It was filled with colorful posters with basic stuff like colors and greetings in the other language. The article said they must learn one of eleven languages before being sent into the field including Thai, Indonesian, Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, and some of the standard European languages. Most of them take their language studies quite seriously. I go to the foreign language section in Barnes & Noble whenever I'm there and I always see a twenty-something guy looking at the Arabic materials.
