I just saw this thread, and I'm likewise very saddened at the news of Mr Casteel's passing.

I read a number of his postings on both Platiquemos and the FSI materials in general, and he always struck me as being entirely sincere and wanting to be helpful. He was happy to answer questions about the Platiquemos materials, and always seemed to be playing straight in discussing the relative merits of different materials. He never left the impression that he was just here to sell his products. In addition to his work with the FSI/Platiquemos materials, he had studied other languages as well, and his enthusiasm for this showed through in his postings.

I'm sorry that we won't be seeing any more comments from him, and that I never had the chance to meet him in person. His death truly saddens me, but as noted above, the Platiquemos series stands as a legacy of at least his Spanish-related endeavors, while his earlier postings remind me that, no matter how irritated I might get at some of the discussions/arguments in this forum, it has brought an ever-growing group of great people together who share a lot of knowledge and good-will.

So thanks, Kungfupower, for informing us on this, and condolences to Mr Casteel's family.

That's a shame. RIP

I agree totally with daristani. I think that other language program publishers who've checked in on this site would've done well to see how he conducted himself and how he didn't let his background turn him into a boastful twit when posting. He could roll with the punches and admit his own shortcomings. I remember his feud with the creator of LSLC but he posted later that they actually saw eye-to-eye on a lot of things after discussing things outside the forum.

That's terrible news. I remember reading some of his posts and I found him to be very helpful and also very humble. This is a great loss for the forum and for the language learning community. If anyone has more information on his passing please share it with us.

Yes I too agree he was a fine gentleman. I had spoken to him on the phone about Platiquemos and found him a class act. It was good that he and Mr. LSLC buried the hatchet. They actually gave each other's products glowing reviews on Amazon. I have used both and found them to be ass kicking courses complementing each other well and in my opinion the best combination around for learning Spanish.

I tried to order from his site and it said that "this customer is unable to recieve funds at this time" or something like that. I had to buy from another site. I emailed him about the problem and never got a response...I never would have thought that it was because of this sad reason.

From his posts here and his messages at the site, as well as Platiquemos, he seemed like a good man.

R.I.P. Mr. Casteel

<<<<I remember his feud with the creator of LSLC>>>>

I am the one who began the thread of LSLC on this site before anyone heard of it. To the point I was accused of being paid to post. I am so glad after all these years that many many others have tried these 2 programs and can agree they are good.
I will miss Mr Casteel as a brother in the love of life and language and am happy i was able to introduce Don and Pat indirectly.
