I am starting a log of my journey to learn Spanish for 2 reasons
1.     To keep track of my progress
2.     To motivate myself to do some daily study

I have been reading these forums for a few months now and find them a wealth of information.

I have no background in Spanish but I am hoping to go to Spain next year with the ability to communicate in Spanish.
With Spain only a couple of hours away by plane, I think this goal will motivate me to learn Spanish.

I have decided to use Michel Thomas and Assimil as my primary learning resources and so far I have completed the MT Foundation course and am currently working my way through The Advanced Course.
When I have finished The Advanced Course, I will do The Language Builder and The Vocab Course.

I have started and stopped Assimil a few times in the last few months, so I really want to concentrate on working through the lessons daily.

I have been reading about the 10000 sentence method over at AJATT and am considering using this method.
He talks about entering 50 sentences a day into an SRS programme, so it will be a matter of time management if I can fit this in.
Of course I don’t have to enter 50, I could just try it and see how I get on.
I have Anki and have been experimenting with sentences from El Pais and SSL4U (this has bilingual texts).
With El Pais I have to translate the sentences myself and as a beginner I could be making mistakes Im not aware of.
I could use the sentences in Assimil as well for this as the texts are bilingual.

My official start date for this is Monday 25th of August as I am working over the weekend.

My Goals for week starting 25/8/08

Finish MT Advanced
Restart Assimil and do a lesson daily

Good luck with it, I started Spanish in September last year and lived in Madrid from May-August and was able to communicate without many problems...Spanish is so similar to English that it can be easily learned and you can pick it up quickly if you study it enough, so it is possible, don't give up and you'll be surprised how far your studying will get you when you travel out there next year :)

Hi Sybaritic

Im solely concentrating on Assimil at the moment, my experiment with The 10,000 Sentence Method didnt go to well as I found the process very time consuming.
I think if I had a lot of hours to spare each day, I would certainly use the method more but to enter 50 sentences a day would take a huge amount of time.
Dont forget that before you enter the sentence, you must understand it completely.
Link

My method involved copy and pasting sentences from El Pais and using Wordreference.com, looking up all the words in the sentence.
When I felt confident that I understood the sentence, I would put it into Anki.

I have been entering the Assimil sentences and it is certainly helping me with recall at the moment but Im only on lesson 18 at present so I dont have a huge amount of sentences to recall.
I think the value of Anki will be apparent in a few months when its start showing me sentences I entered ages ago.

I do recommend it as a method but to do it like the guy at AJATT would require a lot more time than I have.
