I have been studying Japanese for quite some time now. I can understand basic conversations, and I generally get the gist of J-dramas and Anime, however, when it comes to the news, I only catch the odd word or two.

As far as my reading goes, I can read simple manga as well as simple stories, but I can't read any "advanced" materials, like novels or newspapers. I would rate my current level as intermediate.

I am going to use this log to record my progress in Japanese. I am using the AJATT method, and I currently have around 150 sentences in Mnemosyne. Through reading and listening to Japanese, I hope to dramatically increase my ability.

I hope to keep this log for a full 18 months, measuring my transition between intermediate and fluent. I am going to spread goals over month long periods, constantly finding what I need to work on.

OCT 14TH-NOV 14TH GOALS

-Add 600 sentences to my SRS
-Increase listening ability to the "next level", by listening to as much as possible.

I have been watching a lot of J-dramas today, as well as a bit of anime. Around 4-5 hours in total. I was asking myself today "How could I learn even faster?", and the answer was extremely obvious. Do more.

So, I picked up Tae Kim's grammar guide and started harvesting sentences from it. Although I take sentences from "native sources", I have not started using a monolingual dictionary yet, because last time I tried, I was unable to. Therefore, I still use Japanese-English sentences, but I plan on making it one of next month's (Nov.14 through Dec.14) goals to go completely monolingual.

Tae Kim's grammar guide has many sentences that are specially made to teach certain grammar point, so I think I will be using it a quite a bit more for the rest of my first month of learning.

I know that I am going to meet both the goals I set earlier bu Nov. 14th, I am just going to need a bit of elbow grease. Well, so far so good, as should be expected this early on.
