I remember when I was starting my second journey into studying Spanish (the first was High School.) I got hooked on a telenovela where I understood some of what was being said. It was called Amor Real. At first I picked up about halfway through the 95 episode series. By the end though I had improved greatly my ability to pick up spoken Spanish. Since then I've watched parts of a few other novelas. With each one I feel as though my listening skills dramatically picked up.
Last night though, I've finished watching the entire Amor Real novela from start to finish. I "found" it available and watched it from beginning to end at least one episode most days. (Some cliff-hanger days I'd get in more than one episode!) Towards the end of the series I was keeping a notebook with me to copy down any words that I hadn't heard before so I could add them into Mnemosyne (SRS). (I should have done this from the VERY beginning!)
Now I'm trying to decide what to do next. I'm thinking another novela though because it seems to be a good way for me to pick up new words. (More slang than you find in news stories ....)

Spanish soap opera.
I agree that watching TV shows is a great way to practice listening to a language - much more so than movies, because you can watch a little bit of the show each day, whereas with movies it's a one time thing, and you're not going to realistically watch a 2 hour movie in your target language every day.
By the way, I'm currently watching a Spanish series called "Aqui no hay quien viva" ... it's not a telenovela, but it's a comedy. I'd recommend it :)

That sounds like a good series, I'll have to try to find it.
I agree with you about movies vs. tv series. I've got a few movies that I'm still working through, but it seems like quite a time commitment. I wind up having to stop partway through and then forget exactly where I left off. The nice thing about a telenovela is that you get convenient stopping points. (It makes it easy to bookmark your progress.) Plus you can get drawn into a longer story overall than a 2 hour movie.
