Well it's been nearly four years of learning Chinese. I speak Chinese for the majority of my day (excluding times
when I teach English). Still living in Beijing and my girlfriend lives with me we use Chinese 99.9% of the time. She
is studying English at university but luckily, at least her English speaking level doesn't match my Chinese and so
it's quicker to use Mandarin.
I'm mainly using supermemo for nearly everything, but sometimes i'm worried that I have become a slave to the
program. Anyway using it in many ways to learn writing/reading/new characters/listening etc. Also have a
personal tutor that I use sometimes.
I'm certain now I would get a HSK level 6 which is enough to get me into a Chinese university to study. But, still I
feel I have a long way to go. I'm reading stuff like Tintin comfortably so obviously I have a long way to go. I feel
though that this year working on vocabulary I'll become more proficient at reading harder material (comfortably
that it).
Speaking wise I don't that I have too much problems with everyday chat, if I don't know the word I can easily
describe it. Grammar wise I'm still bad, but considering I've not studied grammar formaly not as bad as I usually
think I am. I get my tutor to correct my mistakes and they are becoming less and less. Still I use strange non
usual words to express things. Now though I feel I don't often come across someone that speaks English better
than I speak Chinese so people naturally feel the language we 'should' use is Chinese.
All in all though, there's a long way to go. I would say another 2-3 years of very SOLID hard work. If when I
started Chinese someone told me I would be at the level I am now I would be happy, but not anymore. Indeed
the level i'm at now is the level I have described foreigners speaking English as fluent. But, I'm far from fluent :(
now my standards have radically jumped up.
Oh coming back to England for a holiday I've noticed I sometimes through in Chinese exclamation words and
also still after a month on holiday feel an unease with some aspects of British culture that I felt comfortable with
before.

Thank you for the update. It is very interesting to read. I envy you. I hope you are enjoying it.
What do you think you need to do to get to the level where you want to be? Could you give us an idea of this solid, hard work?

Hi Keith,
Well at times i've been really diligent in the amount of hours i've put in. Often during the last winter holidays I would go to a cafe drink green tea and study for up to 8 to 10 hours. Not being a caffine drinker I found it an amazing drug for concentrating. With green tea I would work almost non stop using Supermemo.
Also I went through a period of paying a student to talk to me for 3 to 5 hours a day and then using our conversations and my reading to her to generate questions for supermemo. Actually such a long time studying with a tutor/student was overkill probably at most I just needed 2 hours a day.
Not sure what level I will be happy with. The daily conversation level I have now is now good. I think I will be happy when I can do everything in Chinese that I can do in English. Maybe even learning ancient Chinese would be good.
What about you how's your Mandarin going?
