I had not looked at Hippocrene books for several years so I did not know that they had several new courses with audio. I bought their Beginner's Hungarian and their Language and Travel Guide to Sicily and was pleasantly surprised. Both have two CDs and are about $30, plus postage. I bought the books directly from their website and received them by UPS in about a week. They only contacted me when the had processed the order, they did not send a receipt right away but otherwise no problems.

I wanted to let everyone know that they have several courses for languages that might be otherwise hard to find methods for, for example: Basque, Georgian, and Slovene.

Beginner's Hungarian: It is an elementary course but seems thorough enough to satisfy my curiosity about Magyar. The CDs get full marks for having very little English--only the section number at the beginning of tracks. I believe they are native speakers on the CDs. Good recordings and no sound effects. Perhaps this could be a nice warm-up before deciding to attack the FSI course.

The only complaint I have is that the first section of the book is given over to a mini-history of Hungary that I think would have been better to break up and include as little fun facts at the end of lessons.

Language and Travel Guide to Sicily: This course presents some Sicilian dialogues in the context of a guidebook for tourists so it is not as pure as I would have liked but if that's what it takes to get such a book into print, so be it. The course is interesting because the Sicilian phrase is said first, then an Italian translation--exactly what I wanted. The CDs have very little English, no sound effects, native speakers (I believe) and good recordings.
