Hello, I have obtained some Assimil CDs and am trying to edit out the exercises, as well as tightening it up by removing the pauses. Essentially, what everyone else seems to do. For this I have used Audacity, but it seems poor at batch processing, I need to truncate silence for every single file, or so it seems. If anyone has any idea on how to best edit Assimil files, please let me know, I really appreciate it!

Thanks,

Gustaf

I use the Beta Version of Audacity which has simple batch processing, but sufficient
for
removing pauses.

As for removing the exercises, probably has to be done by hand. I would do that first,
since the exercises tend to have longer pauses where you can easily see where to cut.

For mine, I just did a batch truncate silence on all files and simply left the
exercises
in. Without the pauses they go pretty fast, and I had my short versions without any
hand
editing at all.

Here is a discussion in another thread...

Thank you for the reply, excellent advice. Now I just need to figure out exactly how much silence to leave in...

If you load up a lesson, you can measure some of the existing pauses to get an idea of what is already in there.(look at the bottom bar
for measure options.) Also, I would suggest trying some lessons with multiple setting if you aren't sure.

For example, I did some Pimsleur lessons with...

1 second (1000ms) seems about the as fast as I can stand before phrases start to run together. This would be for listening and reviewing
only, and what I would do for Assimil.

2 seconds gives me just enough time to respond -IF- I know the response and it is automatic.

3 seconds. Depending on the lesson some of the pauses aren't much longer than 3-5 seconds. So this actually just made the easy stuff the
same, while making the harder phrases (where they give more time) harder. Not helpful for me. At this point I just revert back to the
normal speed.

I know 1-3 seconds isn't a lot of time, but it adds up over the lesson. Especially if you are trying to answer or repeat a phrase.
