Am I supposed to write out the sentences that I have just translated during the active phase? Translating them orally is no problem for me but writing them out when the sentences have started to get longer feels like a chore to me. I'm in lesson 34 of the active phase and just writing the sentences takes up a whole lot of my time. How many of you do this and how important is it in the learning process?

What do the instructions say? They aren't the same for every course, so it's hard to say what you're "supposed to do". However, it's not a bad thing to practice writing. At some point in your studies you may want to be able to write anyway, so why not start with the vocabulary you know.

You don't have to write, just type it on your computer. :)

I speak the translation first to work on doing it quickly and then I write it to practice writing. If I just write it I feel my brain is not being forced to quickly generate words/sentences. The writing is where I can see if I really understood the grammar and spelling rules.

You do not need to write during the active phase of ASSIMIL. You should be able to translate from L1 to L2 and work on that until you have it. However, one of the better ways of achieving L1 to L2 is scriptorium.

Take a look here

and

here

Quote:

1.     Read a sentence aloud.
2.     Say each word aloud again as you write it.
3.     Read the sentence aloud as you have written it.

The whole purpose of this exercise is to force yourself to slow down and pay attention to detail. This is the stage at which you should check all unknowns in grammars or dictionaries

No doubt writing would help you memorizing the words. It might take more time, but in the end it's worth it.
