Are any of the Speech recognition software programs any good these days? Do any of them go beyond asking you to repeat something and giving you a score? (ie they ask you a question and you give the answer in Spanish or Chinese or whatever?) I tried one from berlitz years ago but it seemed a gimmick then.

AFAIK, everyone was using the same speech software for about half-a-dozen years, but now I think there's new algorithms in use.

However, I'm still very sceptical. I have tried using the speech recognition software built into Windows Vista to dictate letters, emails etc, but it didn't work very well at all.

The suggestion in the Window Help file? Buy a better microphone (€100+ noise cancelling headset).

So professional voice recognition needs an expensive headset, but these language tools will mostly be used by people with €5 microphones from a cheap bazaar or market stall. This means that they've got to be pretty forgiving, so you'll get "green" more easily than maybe you should....

How about tone recognition then? I seem to remember that old Rosetta could plot the tone when you practiced Mandarin. Is there any software out there than can do this properly? I would like to track the tones of entire sentences in Chinese and compare that with a reference.
