Hey,

So I'm decent at Spanish. Not perfect, but more than good enough to be completely bored by learning the basics of Portuguese. I've given a listen to the Pimsleur Portugeuse stuff, and it does NOT take me 30 minutes to master a sentence, so I get bored very quickly.

Anyone have any good tips for how to progress in Portuguese in my shoes? I've not been able to find any Spanish-to-Portuguese audio stuff besides a few videos on youtube. Any long-term plan besides going to Brazil?

P.S. I'm interested in Brazilian Portuguese.

Well, there is the FSI course 'Spanish to Portuguese': http://www.fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php?page=Portugu ese

But FSI courses are notoriously dry... However, you'll probably learn a lot really quickly, so it might be worth checking out.

I'm in the opposite situation. I do not want to learn right now, but I certainly want in the future. I believe Some fast-paced course focusing on usage, like assimil could do it. Also take a look here, and master it. Watch stuff in BP.

Pay attention to the 3 subjunctives instead of 2, the absence of "a" in the future with "Ir" -> Vou falar/Voy a hablar.

As I'm not a Spanish speaker, I can't go any further. If you need a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker, feel free to PM me.

Thanks Jeff, and although I found that blog VERY interesting, it didn't give me many practical tips about learning Portuguese. Rather, he had some specific information about speaking Portuguese like those from Rio, but that's far beyond where I am right now.

So anew, does anyone have any specific resources (preferably free, online ones) that can help me out? At this point I'm just doing Pimsleur but I can't help nod off after a while.

Why don't you try listening-reading? Or at least Assimil? I found FSI to be too boring to be effective, but it seems to be designed specifically for people in your situation.

You can always try to meet with a native speaker at Skype and discuss where you really are with Portuguese. Technically, you shouldn't have many problems with vocabulary but grammar can be quite tricky... Fell free to PM me if you have any doubts, since I speak both languages, even though my Spanish isn't anywhere near flawless.
