Either Bryson got the wrong end of the stick, didn't check his facts properly or the original poster misunderstood what he said. Bill Bryson's books on England are funny but he is quite prone to exaggerate and I would take his claims on anything with a pinch of salt.

I quoted exactly what he wrote in the first post of the thread. He was referencing a study by Magnus Ljung. Googling suggest that the study may in fact have applied only to English loan-words, which means Bryson was either confused or glossing over the truth to make his point stronger.
