I am sure this method has been used by others before me, but I came up with it last night and used it (with Turkish, but any foreign language is probably appropriate).
First I copied out a text in Turkish. Then I made another copy. The first copy was a crib, the second I cut up with scissors into individual words and phrases. I then mixed up the individual words and gradually started re-assembling the original text, referring to the crib where necessary. It was a little like putting together a paper jigsaw puzzle.
After doing this a few times, I had the original text memorised. Also, the sentence structure and vocabulary, especially the previously unknown words in the text, were well engraved in my memory. |

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
No, honestly, I don't think I can thank you enough :) It's an excellent idea, and I'm definitely going to try it out with Japanese (and maybe Hebrew when I become more advanced in it).
Thank you so much!!! :)

Ehi Maya Star17, when you tried it out with Japanese let me know because I was thinking exatly the same ... but as I don't have much time right now, I'll have to wait. So if you collect any experience, please share it with us !!!
Thank you William, for the good idea !!!

I tried it out just a few hours ago.
It worked quite well! I used part of a children's book I'm currently reading, and did exactly what William said to do; the only slight difference was that I highlighted words that were new to me and wrote the English meaning in brackets beside each one. I even recorded myself reading it out loud - I'm going to listen to it tonight when I go to sleep (yes, I listen to Japanese audio in my sleep).
The only slight complaint that I could make is that it's somewhat time-consuming, so it's not really something you could do everyday. But, I would imagine that even doing it 1-3 times a week would be helpful :) I'll definitely be doing this again.

Are you serious? I think I saw something about that on the AJATT site.
Does that actually benefit you? I was thinking about trying that with Spanish. I'm a little skeptical though. Also,
it might keep me awake!
What do you listen to exactly? |

Yeah, I got the idea from the AJATT site.
I've only been doing it for a few days, and to be honest, I haven't noticed anything yet, but I want to keep at it for at least a few months, just in case it's something that takes more time. I figure that our brains still probably function when we sleep (how could/would we dream otherwise?).
As for staying awake - it's not an issue as long as you turn it down VERY low (eg. volume level 1 or 2). You'll still be able to hear it, but it shouldn't stop you from falling asleep (I'm mildly insomniac and this hasn't been an issue for me, so I can't see it being an issue for most people out there).
Anyway, I listen to whatever I can get. I've tried music and essays read out loud by a native speaker so far, next on my hit list is the recording I did of myself. I'm hoping to also get news and maybe short stories/myths read out loud sometime as well.

It is somewhat time-consuming. Working with one text takes me at least an hour, more likely an hour and a half. When I first hit on the idea, it was half past eight in the evening, and after working on it rather intensively, the next time I looked at my watch it was after midnight. Still, I could have been doing something less useful in that time, like watching TV.
If you have an hour or two to spare, working up a text is a good method. If you have less time, you could review a text rather than embarking on a new one. And if you only have five minutes spare, then looking over vocabulary cards (another favourite method of mine) is probably a better method.

Increasingly I use card (mainly from cut-up index cards) rather than paper, as card is less prone to blow away in the winds of autumn.
Sometimes I take the words, phrases and sentence parts with me when I go out, using them the way I would use vocabulary cards.

I did this again today, this time for a song (also in Japanese). It worked just as well as last time, and best of all, it took considerably less time than last time. :)
