Volunteer in a Spanish speaking country?? | ||

Does anyone have any experience volunteering in a Spanish speaking country, or doing some type of immersion in which you do half day language class and then volunteer the rest of the day? Any programs, countries, cities you would recommend or warn against?

I don't have experience in this area, but I have always wanted to try this.

I do! Last summer I went on a volunteering project to Madrid in Spain to teach English as a foreign language to a family (mainly children). You live with a host family (therefore get a decent immersion), although often they ask you to speak English to the children at all times because you're effectively there to help them before yourself in terms of language immersion...It's a really good experience, you can stay for months on end, learn the language (through the family, their TV, local area, sightseeing etc) and have a good time too...what's more, you don't get paid (as you're a volunteer) but you get free accomodation and food in exchange for your work. You can meet other volunteers doing the same thing (who are mostly from the US) and you only work 3-4 hours on weekdays so you have the rest of the time to do language classes or whatever you want :)
I booked it through Twin Volunteering (http://www.workandvolunteer.com/programme/?pgid=101), but my American friends I met out there booked through several different US companies who offered the same thing, but all companies are linked to Club RCI in Madrid (http://www.clubrci.es/), so it's just a case of shopping around and trying to find the cheapest deals (sorry I don't remember the namesof the American companies)...but I remember that I paid the cheapest lol (probably because it's easier for the UK branch to sort things out with another EU country than it is for the US, I'm not sure) but anyway sorry if what i've said is unclear, I'm just babbling now! It is really good though, I'd recommend it completely! This sounds awesome. I'd love to spend an extended time in Spain, but cannot afford living in hotel. I prefer to learn and teach (I'm a certified public school teacher) and I've already spent 6 weeks at an immersion school in Mexico so I'm ready to rock in Spain :) I'm definitely checking into this! There's an interesting language school in Cuernevaca, Mexico that I'm planning on
going to this summer, they have a program where you get 3 free hours of class in the morning then you volunteer for the organizations 3 hours in the afternoon (when paid students are doing sociocultural language). I know of an excellent and cheap(er) opportunity to improve ones' Spanish in Bolivia, while volunteering in a rural secondary school. It will be a full-on immerson, as none of the residents speak any English, and it's run by the Centro de Educación Alternativa Agricola (Agrooxxi.org. However,the whole programme is being organised by a UK partner charity called Teach A Man to Fish, and it costs less than £35 a week to attend. (Cheap holiday!). I've just completed a months immersion with Proyecto Peru in Cusco; they also offer free volunteer/internship
