The other language forum has inspired me to start a little enquete about in which countries people have lived and have travelled to in combination with the usage of the native languages of those countries.

A. In which countries have you lived and did u speak the country's native language(s) there?

1. Germany (yes)
2. USA (yes)
3. The Netherlands (only for 4 months) (yes)

B. To which countries have you travelled and did you speak the country's native language(s) there?

1. Mexico (no)
2. France (yes)
3. Italy (no)
4. Mallorca - Spain (only beginner's level Spanish)
5. Denmark (no)
6. Switzerland (yes - French and German)
7. Belgium (yes - Dutch and French)
8. USA (yes)
9. The Netherlands (yes)

1. England, UK - English (yes)
2. France - French (yes)
3. Brussels, Belgium - French (yes), Dutch (no)*
4. Lagos, Nigeria - English (yes), Yoruba (no)
5. Flanders, Belgium - Dutch (yes)

*I didn't speak Dutch at the time.

I've been to too many countries to mention them all here. I'll mention those where I spoke something other than English:
Luxembourg (French)
Senegal (French)
Switzerland (French)
Germany (broken German)
Japan (very broken Japanese)

Third point which I am interested in:

C. Countries where the languages you spoke, or the level you spoke them at, weren't sufficient to properly communicate with the people (not necessarily everyone):
Germany (German)
Hungary (Hungarian)
Iceland (Icelandic)
Italy (Italian)
Japan (Japanese)
Kenya (Swahili)
Oman (Arabic)
Poland (Polish)
Spain (Spanish/Catalan)
Nigeria (Nigerian Pidgin and various tribal languages)

Probably other too but I don't remember everything.

Lived in:

1. USA (yes)
2. Finland (yes)

Traveled to:

1. UK (yes)
2. France (no)

My mother took me to Paris and London when I was maybe 13-14. At that time I had no respect for the countries of the world or their languages. Nowadays, I would hesitate before visiting a country where I did not speak the language, simply out of respect.
