Hi Everyone!
I'm not sure if I'm placing this in the right area - my apologies if I haven't.
I've made a New Years Resolution already, and research into Visa requirements etc are already underway. My plan is to move to Hungary in December 2010 for a period of 1 year!!
I'm really excited about the decision, but a little scared too! Yes, it is a while away - but as it turned out, I have made a commitment to my workplace for 2010 and I won't back out on it. However, when school closes in December, I will be on my way!
My first White Christmas! My first time in Europe, my first time living abroad & most definitely my first time living in a non-English speaking environment!
My area of work and my links to Hungarians means that I should be able to find a job quite easily. I plan to have one before I leave here, although I should have enough savings to cover living expenses for a period of around 9 months without work to fall back on (my plan is to have this as a safety net and to use it for some travel etc - not for living).
I know the normal stuff, such as making sure that I find Hungarian people to associate and don't just hang out with English speakers - but does anyone else have some further advice? Either Hungary specific or otherwise? Such as preparation things, or things such as... should I go to a language school? I cope reasonably well at the moment in the language - although my social chatting is relatively limited (I can understand most of the conversation, but not join in as much as I would in English). So, I don't necessarily feel that it is absolutely necessary for me, but would it help to make the transition easier for me? Any other ideas/advice?
By the way, have a wonderful Christmas everyone! :)

Probably my first spot will be Budapest, as I have friends there. I also have friends in Pécs so that's another possibility at some stage... it very much depends also on where I find work :)

If you want to hang out with Hungarians then I suggest finding some people there who have similar hobbies....or take up a new hobby. Join a juggling club and have someone explain how to juggle in Hungarian ;)
I find that the people I meet casually on the street, in a restaurant, in a bar, etc, just have the same conversation with me over and over again. where are you from, are you a student, do you like our city, isn't our country the awesomest in the whole world? Been there, done that. The best thing is if you have a common interest with some people, which gives you an excuse to hang out.

doviende - this is awesome advice! Thanks so much!
I was actually only thinking the other day as to what things I would do to meet people. I don't really like to mix work with pleasure too much (I have a few good friends from workplaces, but mostly I have outside friends). There would definitely have to be some sort of 'active' group. I'd love maybe a hiking type group... plus something artsy as I enjoy doing things like nail art etc... hmmm....
