Sorry, but I didn't know where to post this, and I thought the people on this forum could
be more helpful than elsewhere. I will be traveling this summer, among other places,
throughout North Africa. At times I will be with my sister, who does not speak Arabic or
French. I was curious about language, and interacting with people in North Africa. In
most of the Maghreb, would it be fine to address people in hotels, businesses, markets,
in French? Or should I use smatterings of Arabic, even though I don't speak it at a high
level? I am not opposed to using formalities in Arabic, but I'd rather not slaughter the
language :). And in Egypt, what are the percentages of people who speak either French or
English? I tried to find some data on knowledge of languages, but couldn't. I know French
really isn't used in Egypt, but has somewhat of a presence. Overall, I just thought some of
you who have visited these countries could share a bit about your experience and give
some advice. Thanks!

Ok, i have never been in Morroco or Egypt but i have a good idea about your question.
I think it's more than safe to speak French in Morroco, i believe everyone understand it there, and there also some who understand Spanish too.
As for Egypt, you are right, it's very rare to find someone speaking French there but most of the youth generation there speak English, and a good one too..but the same is not applied on the elderly.
