Yes, this is possible. I have studied myself German at home. I started a year ago from scratch. Now I'm B2 level (Goethe-Zertifikat B2). I strongly recommend you Tell Me More.

Viel Spaß!

It's definitely possible to self-study and prepare for an exam, instead of taking up an often expensive preparatory course that doesn't guarantee exam success (though chances are higher, one could argue).

I personally took and passed the JLPT 1, DALF C2, ZOP C2, CELI B2 and DELE B1 exams without attending any classes. What I did was, take DALF C2 for instance, find the books that are available out there in the market, get them, and practise them - especially the accompanying CDs - I love listening to them, since they prepare you for the listening section of the exam, and they also serve as a kinda yardstick (at least for me) that I should be able to converse and use the vocabulary like the speakers in the dialogues.

Of course, read as widely as possible - newspapers, magazines, watch TV, listen to radio...they do help. But be prepared for a long process, well, language learning is afterall a long process. If you want to achieve the required level e.g. C2, one has to put in really lots of efforts...

Indeed I find that taking many classes one loose a lot of money and time pointless... (not always of course; there are excellent teachers also)

Thank you for sharing your succeed, which reinforces the fact that it's possible to pass those exams. My ambition with German is lower than yours with French, and I got many books with lot of mock tests to practice.

Warm regards!
