Not sure if this the right place for this topic.
Has anyone here ever taken the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), the proficiency exam put out by the Chinese government you have to take if you want to work or study in China? I'm curious as to what the test is like. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Multiple choice. There seems to be a fair amount of practice tests available.

Once helped a friend work for the intermediate level. It consists of 4 parts, but all multiple choice. The advanced level seems include writing and oral section.

I took it last year, and got level 6 out of 11. However i'm afraid i cannot help you a lot because i've heard that the format was fundamentally changed this year. Anyway I can tell you this clearly that you'd better clarify your purpose and approximate level to get useful info. I got a level 3 last year, and yes, I just had a look at the new structure and I can confirm it is totally changed this year.
Now you actually have to decide beforehand which level you are aiming for and sign up to be tested at exactly that level. Before, you signed up for either basic, intermediate or advanced, and then you got different levels within each of those, depending on your results. I am hoping to take a higher level this year, but I am undecided whether to go for level 4, which I feel might be withing comfortable reach, and level 5 which would be more of a stretch, but perhaps doable.
