My mother today came up with a job opportunity in Prague....in fact she read an article on a local paper that shows many features of the country.
I told her that I should learn Czech first to avoid those known initial difficulties in another country. However, she told me that tackling English properly would be enough to get by around the country.
Obviously I've doubted it...that's why I decided to start this thread....
PS: Is German another language that Czech people aim at?

You do not need to speak much Czech to get by in Prague. You will pick up the bare essentials in next to no time if you move here. Beyond that, I have met people who have lived here for 10 or more years who can still hardly say anything at all in Czech. They survive perfectly well using English. Of course, if you want to participate in Czech culture (e.g. go to the theater, or have a lot of non-expat friends) it helps to learn Czech. Be warned, though, it can be quite a challenge if you have not learned a Slavic language before.
Turning to German - this is not such a prevalent language in Prague. Maybe more so on some of the border towns with Germany, so it would not help you much in Prague itself.
So, I would not worry about language difficulties if I were you. Just come here, and you will get by just fine like thousands of other expats do. You can always start learning Czech once you are here.

Thanks for the reply, Splog...
I wonder if many locals are always eager to speak to foreigners in English....

It depends. Younger people generally want to try out their English - and you will be very impressed with the level many have achieved. Older people usually speak less and are less enthusiastic about using it.
