Well actually this post is about Hungarian, partly. It seems Hungarian is a chic language not just for language learning, but also for linguists or amateurs who propose different viewpoints on it's origin. I admit that I have my own hobbyhorses which are not the taste of modern Finno-Ugric linguists but at least is part of old traditional Hungarian linguistics cherished by the flower of 19th century writers and intelectuals.
(e.g Hungarian is rather Turkic then FU, distant relationship to Turkic and FU languages) But I would not go as far as to claim "An old Hungarian dialect found on the British islands" and say that Hungarian is the mother of English language as the Hungarian Varga Csaba did in his recent book titled "The English vocabulary from the Hungarian view". Csaba Varga's "findings" reminds me of those by other csodabogárok.
As to Hungarian linguistic origins, there's little doubt that Hungarian shows the most similarity to certain Finno-Ugric languages (see the similarity of roots found in Mansi or Khanty or the shared concept of indefinite and definite conjugation as used in Mordvin, for example). However I do disagree with the preponderance assumed by the Finno-Ugric linguistic school in trying to determine the ethnogenesis of the Hungarians. If ethnogenesis could be reduced to the abstract language trees of comparative linguists, then we could deduce that all monolingual Americans who speak only English must trace their ethnic origins to the British colonists speaking Early Modern English who began arriving in the 17th century. It doesn't matter whether these Americans have documented evidence of their descending from slaves from Africa, fishermen from Sweden or peasants from China. The linguistic classification trumps all in the linguocentric approach to ethnogenesis. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
