How do you reckon? All current languages are one point in a linguistic continuum.

Every now and then, linguists and historians look back in time and give different points of the continuum different names, but the process is rather arbitrary. No language is older than another, unless you can point to the time of its inception, such as in the case of Nicaraguan Sign Language.
