I don't know if the van Dale dictionaries are available for PW1 models, too. They appeared for download on my Manage Your Contents and Devices page for my PW2 after I manually upgraded the Kindle firmware to the latest PW2 firmware version. If you haven't upgraded to the 5.4.4.2 firmware, there's a slim chance that installing it will unlock the additional dictionary downloads for you too, but I doubt it. (If they are available, you'll need to manually send them to your Kindle via your Manage Your Contents and Devices page, because they're not installed by default.) BTW, the latest iOS and Android Kindle apps also offer the van Dale dictionaries as optional downloads.
If you have a Kindle PW2 or a Kindle Voyage, you'll need to download the latest firmware and install it on your device. If you don't want to wait for the automatic over-the-air update to kick in, you can manually download the latest firmware .bin file from Amazon's support website, copy it to the root folder of your Kindle and update the firmware via the Kindle's Settings menu. After the latest firmware was installed, you'll have to connect the Kindle to a Wifi network and trigger the dictionary download(s) from your Manage Your Contents and Devices page: 1. Log on to Amazon and select Digital Contents > Manage Your Contents and Devices > Books > Dictionaries & User Guides 2. Click the check box left of the dictionaries that you want to transfer and click Deliver. BTW, if you want to give the new Word Wise feature a try, you'll also need to download the free Merriam Webster's Advanced Learner's English Dictionary and a free Word Wise enabled book, for example A Tale of Two Cities. I don't know if it's because I don't have a Kindle device, but use the iOS App, but I've got nothing under "Dictionaries & User Guides". My dictionaries are under "Books". They still work fine, though, I can buy a dictionary and use it in the app without issues. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

AFAIK, the system dictionaries available in the iOS and Android apps are hard-coded and are provided as free in-app downloads. For example, if you wanted to download the Dutch-English dictionary with the iOS app, you'd have to look up a random word in a Kindle book, tap the dictionary button in the lower left corner of the Dictionary dialog box and then select Nederlands-Engels in the Select Dictionary dialog box. (This will download the 2014 edition of the Van Dale Groot Woordenboek Nederlands-Engels.) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

That's fine if you want a Dutch-English dictionary, but there's no Portuguese-English dictionary to choose from, until you buy one and download it. I think. At least, I can choose the Dutch-English dictionary, but for Portuguese I could only choose the monolingual dictionary, until I bought a Portuguese-English one. The only translation dictionaries I can choose on my phone are for Dutch, Mandarin and Japanese into English, and the other way around. The other dictionaries are monolingual.

That's the default behavior of most Kindle apps. Except for the bilingual Chinese and Japanese dictionaries, which have been available for quite some time on all supported Kindle devices and apps, Kindle apps only come with monolingual dictionaries. While Amazon frequently updates the firmware of eInk Kindles and the Kindle Fire tablets, it usually takes some time before all apps get updated. For example, the Kindle Windows app still doesn't offer the Dutch dictionaries for download. That's why I specifically mentioned the Paperwhite 2 and Voyage models, which appear to be the only eInk models that allow the download of the new bilingual dictionaries. (The new 7th generation basic Kindle should also work.) It's quite possible that Amazon will eventually add bilingual dictionaries in other languages to future iOS/Android Kindle app versions. In the meantime, you'll unfortunately need to buy bilingual dictionaries yourself. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Deleting half my books seemed to work. There weren't that many, but one of them must have been corrupted.
I'm glad to have my toy back! The dictionary function on the kindle app for iPads is fantastic. Once a definition is pulled up its easy to scroll through the dictionaries. If a word isn't in one it's fast to swipe through others and check there. I don't know if this works the same for the Fire. 1 person has voted this message useful |
