SamD's recent post on George Chesnut reminded me of Joel Stern, who also once worked at the FBIS. He is now with the State Department's Office of Language Services.

Here, on p. 4, is an excerpt from an interview with him: Reflections of a Polyglot Translator.

Here at Translators Cafe, is another excerpt from the same interview. I could not locate the complete interview in a single location.
