I am looking for inspiration on what words and phrases to use in my search for what I am looking for.

Specifically I am interested in analysis of language by machine. In particular I am interested to see if anyone has mapped/recorded emotional connotations of words.

For example,
by automated machine recognition of facial expressions when words are read to a person.

Are you aware of any studies like this?

What I want to do is parse a section of text and summerise information about it. Is it positive? Is it fearful?
But to do that I need a way for a machine to have a small understanding of what words mean. And, although the meaning of words change of course, it would be an interesting starting point.

I'm sure the work has been done as such a technology would be used to identify terrorists and so forth. But what is this technology (and related technologies) called?
