Recently there was a thread on why Russian isn't being learned in the West, and someone mentioned there that one of the good reasons to learn Russian is the music.
I thought I would compile a small list of music from all over the 20th century and beyond in hope of changing that situation. :)
Folk/Traditional
- Rachmaninoff is at the piano and Nadezhda Plevitskaya sings: "Powder and Paint"/"Белилицы-румяницы") (1926)
A woman is removing her make up (rouge and ceruse?) as her husband is riding back home. He's bringing her a gift: a plaited silken whip to beat her. She's wondering why she's at fault with him. She then remembers how she had paid her neighbor a visit, during which she offered a glass of mead to another guest, a bachelor, who really appreciated her friendly gesture and complimented her on the way she moves...
- A traditional folk song performed by the Pyatnitskiy Choir.
"И кто его знает"/"And Who Knows" (recorded in 1970s)
- A traditional Russian romance with gypsy motifs from the film "A Cruel Romance" by the famous director Eldar Ryazanov. Sang by Valentina Ponomareva and performed by Larisa Guzeyeva. Those melancholic songs sound to me a bit like fado...
"А напоследок я скажу"/"The Last Thing I'll Tell You" (1984)
Pop and Rock
- Irina Ponarovskaya sings a naive Soviet song. "Good looks can't replace the tenderness of plain lips or the beauty of a small, but loyal and faithful heart..."
"Неприметная Красота"/"Unnoticed Beauty" (1975)
- Alla Pugacheva — Russia's iconic music diva — performs her biggest hit.
"Миллионы алых рох"/"A million crimson roses" (1983)
- Viktor Tsoi "Мы ждем перемен"/"We're waiting for change". A 1987 song performed in 2005 by Alexei Znamensky.
- Наутилиус Помпилиус "Гудбай Америка"/"Goodbye America" (1987)
- Kombinatsiya was one of the first girl bands in the Soviet Union.
"Russian Girls" (1989)
Notice how they dance in front of "Beriozka," a shop in downtown Moscow that was opened during Perestoika. People who returned from business trips with leftover foreign cash could buy both foreign-made goods that everyone dreamed about and coveted (like Marlboro and diapers) as well as Soviet-made items that most of the population never had the chance to see. Compare Beriozka's catalog and price list with how the average people shopped before the food shortages of the late 80s.
- Natalya Vetlitskaya did some quality pop back when singers still had class and talent.
"Посмотри мне в глаза"/"Look Me In The Eyes" (1992)
"Но только не говори мне"/"Just Don't Tell Me That" (1994)
- Lada Dance does a crazy dance routine.
"Baby Tonight" (1993)
- ЛЮБЭ "Давай, наяривай"/"Play It Hard" (1994)
- Irina Saltykova "Серые глаза"/"Gray Eyes" (1995?)
- All the kids in my elementary school, including me, knew all the words to this song by Natali. :)
"Ветер с моря дул"/"The Wind Was Blowing From The Sea" (1998)
- t.A.T.u., the pseudo-lesbian duo that challenged social mores in 2000. Their first CD was the first that I have ever bought. "Я сошла с ума"/"I've Gone Mad" (All The Things She Said)
- Kolibri "Пластинка"/"The Vinyl" (2002)
- Zemfira is probably one of the most powerful performers of the last decade.
"Прогулка"/"A Walk"
"Не отпускай"/"Don't Let Go"
"Mы разбиваемся"/"We're Crashing"
"Небо море облака"/"Sky Sea Clouds"
"Любовь как случайная смерть"/Love As Sudden Death"
