You know what? I've never watched The Wire - I guess you're a fan - but nearly every
single US TV show is available on DVD with Spanish dub (except NCIS, for some reason). But, admittedly not having seen it but having heard way too much about it, The Wire strikes me as one of those shows where you miss a lot of the fun if you don't watch it in the original language. The slang, the accents, the culture... Spanish people keep telling me they're trying to watch it in English. July, you nailed it.
The Wire is some of the best TV ever produced in my opinion. That said, I was telling a Mexican friend of mine that he would lose way too much of it if he watched it dubbed. Way too much Baltimore hood dialect, that in itself is something to behold, it's amazing. I was watching the special features, they had translators on set for the actors so they could understand the street slang!! That's right, English slang so thick and particular to the Baltimore area that English speaking actors needed help understanding some of it. Amazing. The series was so good, it was one of the rare ones that I chose to watch in English because I didn't want to lose anything in translation. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I totaly get your point but here is what I think: - Youre absolutely right about your mexican friend, it is a good way to learn English for them. - Since I was 18 I have read all my litterature in English so I can read fluently and since I am from a "small language" most of our movies are English, or in mandarin, etc etc, we never dub our movies and I am an avid opponent against dubbing for the same reasons you stated. I am even against it even though I don´t know a word in the original language. - Having read both books, "Homicide" and "The Corner" in English, the books which the serie is loosely based on. And both are bricksized. - My main point. I do this to learn Spanish. I want to watch something interesting, dubbing in this case seems to produce a more clear language that is easier for me to understand. I have watched countless Spanish movies the latest being "Nueva Reinas" but it is just too hard to get everything. Dubbing in this case produce the same effect like the recomendation about books. It is better to read a nonspanish book translated to Spanish than read for example Don Quijote, just to get a more simple and clear language without people speaking under their breath and with too much slang! - Looking forward too more replies!-) PS- Look at the youtubeclip and you will understand what I mean-DS Edited by aftonbladet on 18 December 2011 at 9:45am 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I hardly ever watch dubbed movies so I wouldn't know, but while it's possible that the

I've taken the same approach to watching some shows and movies dubbed in Spanish as you're taking. I get it, and you're right, it's another great tool to use. This is a case where you won't get everything that the producers intended, but that's a side issue as you're using it more as a tool to learn with and at the same time you're getting the advantage of something that will captivate your interest. Like you said, much like a great book. I see where you're coming from, enjoy the series. On a side note, regarding English movies that are dubbed in Spanish: as our culture here in the States has changed so much to include Spanish at almost every turn, I think the dubbing has come a long way. A great series that HBO made, "In Treatment" I thought was dubbed very well and got a lot of the emotion right. Recently I watched "A Better Life" on DVD. I thought they did a really good job with the dubbing, impressive. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Thanks for the input.
I chosed "The Wire" just because it is supposed to be soo good and being very chosy about what I watch I only want to watch whats best. "La piel que habito" is also a very good movie with clear language, 7,7 on IMDB. Will post my experience on watching "The Wire" on the language learning log. Thanks for the tip about "A better life"! Would love to watch "Hospital Central" to also learn a bit of medical Spanish but that will have to wait, after watching clips on youtube I realize it is simply too hard for me right now.
