Hi all,

I'd like to watch some Spanish movies in order to supplement my Spanish learning (for the bilingual benefits as well
as being able to travel around Latin America)

The movies should 1) have versions with English subtitles and 2) Be relatively free of thick accents. For example I've
read that Argentinians speak Spanish in a difficult way, and am not ready for this.

What movies would you recommend from the following genres: Action, Adventure, Biography, Comedy, Crime,
Documentary, Fantasy, History, Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller, War, Western

List as many as you feel like, Thanks!

800 Bullets/800 Balas Western/comedy
A spoof spaghetti western set in the modern day, in a Spanish wild west theme park where they used to film spaghetti westerns (and I believe it is a genuine vintage spaghetti western set, too). It's reeeeeeeeeeally good. It's very funny and extremely well observed (it was made by a genuine film buff, Alex de las Iglesias).

El Lobo/The Wolf Thriller
Based on the memoirs of Franco's mole in ETA. Probably not very accurate, but riveting.

El Labarinto del Fauno Fantasy/horror/war
An adult fairy tale featuring a kid going into Narnia-esque adventures in the midst of the Spanish Civil War.
Filmed in Spain by Guillermo del Toro, Hollywood's favourite Mexican director.
also
La Espinosa del Diablo/The Devil's Backbone
By the same director, an earlier film

There's lots of movies to start with here:
movies
And there's other thread with more movies and series suggestions, just search.
I recommend keeping a list of recommendedations as you come across them, in case you ever find yourself bored and without a clue of what to watch.

Also, I'll say that I've watched a number of episodes of a few of Argentinian series (actually those were some of the first things I watched, if only because they're so pervasive on the Internet and easy to find)
and I don't think the accent is that hard to understand, a lot easier than the rest of accents I heard in movies from Latin American, especially ones that swallows all the "s"s and endings.

Here's some of the ones I liked from the thread above (in no particular order):
Amores Perros
Lucia y el Sexo
Maria, Llena Eres de Gracia
Y Tu Momma Tambien
The Motorcycle Diaries Diarios de Motocicleta
Nicotina
En la Cama
Sin Nombre
Abre Los Ojos
Mar adentro
Hable Con Ella
El laberinto del fauno
anything by Pedro Almodovar in particular is pretty good (though I've only confirmed a few)

Caution: Almodóvar isn't to everyone's taste. His early films revolved around the Spanish gay scene and featured a lot of cross-dressing male leads. Not everyone's cup of tea, and that's not a judgement on anyone -- personal taste is a personal thing!

If you live anywhere where you can subscribe to Verizon Fios cable TV, they have a Spanish package for $12.99 a month that includes over 53 Spanish-language channels from many different countries and they are always playing movies. This includes an on-demand channel with hundreds of Venezuelan movies.

Wouldn't it be better to name those "early films" instead of making a generalization that could potentially keep quite a few people from discovering this great director?

His first film with international distribution--¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto!! (1984)--is a black comedy about an overworked mother. Matador (1986) is about a heterosexual bullfighter who gets turned on by killing. Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (1988) is a great comedy about a woman nearly going mad after her lover leaves her. Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980) are all women, but now that I think of it, one of them is a lesbian, and there's a minor transvestite on the loose... That makes it too provocative for most viewers. Cross that out then.

"El Crimen Ferpecto" - Álex de la Iglesia, dark comedy with a good story line and clear speech.

"Volver" - Almodóvar, also has fairly clear speech, although I found the story somewhat boring. If you like Penelope Cruz though, you'll enjoy it. She does a good job in the film.

"El Asombroso Mundo de Borjamari y Pocholo" - Cavestany, a completely silly and fun movie, particularly if you like Mecano's music or all things re: Madrid in the 80s (and being stuck in that past).

I'll also second the recommendation for "Y tu Mamá También". Speech is very clear throughout the movie, even with a couple different accents.
