As a student of Japanese, the vast amounts of anime and dramas online have been a huge reinforcement in learning the language. Now that I'm focusing more on my Spanish studies, I'm looking for television shows that would assist in my immersion process. I'm not too keen on the typical sappy telenovela, though. (Am I missing anything?)
I prefer something with a bit more substance. A great example would be Argentina's 'Epitafios.' BUT any recommendations are welcome! 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I recommend that you try RTVE a la carta there's something for everyone there. RTVE is the "BBC" of the Spanish-speaking world in my opinion. It will also help to expose you to Iberian Spanish. Those of us in English-speaking North America naturally tend to focus on our neighbors and often tend to think of Spain as not "relevant" to our needs. This is a mistake. I don't enjoy a lot of what Telemundo or Univisión has to offer. These two US based networks are a bit too heavily telenovela and tabloid oriented for my tastes. Check out the offerings from Spain. They may be just what you're looking for despite the fact that the Spanish is Iberian.
As far as telenovelas go, many are pure pablum but some are worth your time. A few are quite well written and have excellent acting. I especially enjoyed Telemundo's recent La reina del sur. Check it out on dvd. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I don't know whether you have access to TVE Internacional, but there are some programs there like Buscamundos and Destino España, where you visit Spaniards abroad resp. immigrants to Spain, and they show you their towns and their homes and their friends, and this is all done in informal Spanish as you would hear it from your Spanish neighbours if you lived there. I can't stand sitcoms in any language, but this genre is a good alternative - although I have to turn down the sound when the music in the programs I mentioned becomes too abominable.
