Barron's have released new versions of their Mastering Vocabulary series for French and Spanish.
Mastering Spanish Vocabulary
Mastering French Vocabulary
I purchased the new French edition, and the amount of audio is incredible. It says ten hours but when I extracted the disk it came to nearly 13 hours. I've listened to the first couple of units and nearly all the vocabulary is on the recording. This means the audio material covers at least 12,000 terms. I was initially concerned the audio was computer generated, but it is actual live recordings. The other big surprise is the cost. It seems incredibly cheap for the book never mind the recordings.
I've developed a method for using the material which works well for me.
1. Listen to the unit using repeat track a couple of times listening for words you recognise and those you don't.
2. Read the unit in the book. Check if you correctly recognised some words and check the meaning of those you don't.
3. Re-read the unit so you're roughly familiar with the translations.
4. Listed to the track a large number of times. This can be done commuting or during other dead time.
5. There is a gap after each word to repeat it.
6. Make sure you listen to the audio so much that the meaning comes instantly when you hear the word.
I found with repeated listening the words crept from passive to active recall. I didn't expect this. Sometimes when I repeated the word I visualised the meaning rather than thinking in English. I think each track has about 40 to 80 words and lasts between five and ten minutes. I should also add that I listened to each track about thirty times.

How is the material laid out? Is it a set of categorized lists according to different themes just read aloud with a
pause?

Thanks for posting this, I've just ordered the Spanish version. It looks like an
efficient and fun way of building vocabulary. I'll post my thoughts once it arrives.

Is the audio just of the words, or do they say the sample sentence as well?

Could you please make a scan of some of the pages from the book, to see how it's laid out - amazon doesn't provide the Look Inside function for these books.
