I have a problem with spelling as far as -ous,-eous,ious, endings are concerned. IS there
any rule governing those endings? The helpful "y" doesn't apply here, for we've luxury -
luxurious and on the other hand calamity - calamitous

Learn Latin! ;-) I suppose, there are etymological reasons:
calamitas, -atis / calamitosus has no i,
luxuria (luxuries) / luxuriosus has an i in it.
And the pronunciation is different:
calamitous ends in [-ɪtəs], but luxurious in [-əriəs]

As a native (American) English speaker that does not know Latin, the best we can do is sound out the word, but otherwise memorize it. :( That's probably why a lot of Americans rely on auto-correct.

Funny how a language that is a complete mish-mash ended up as the nearest thing we have to a global standard language.
