I haven't been here for a while! It's hard for me to stay on top of "social" websites so I need to do a better job. As for what I've been doing, I've recently started doing Duolingo to brush up on my German basics. I also do a few other languages on there as well but I've recently taken up an interest in Maltese which I learned about on Duo. It's a Semetic language written in the Latin script and spoken only in Malta so the materials are pretty hard to find (did score with an ebook, Memrise courses, and a few websites though).
The way I found out about it was through a person on the site drumming up support for a course to be made. For me it was love at first listen and it's opened up a whole new world for language for me. At first I only wanted to deal mainly with Germanica languages as I like them best of all but hearing Arabic and Italian mixed with English thrown in for good measure was a "wow" moment. I'm even considering doing Arabic now.
Anyways, this not really something all that important, just wanted to get re-introduced to HTLAL.

That's funny, I actually was just reading about Maltese last night and thinking I might
study it someday. It does sound really cool and Malta looks like a beautiful country!

I've always thought Maltese was so fascinating! Any interesting factoids you can share?
How similar to Arabic is it?

Well, I don't really know anything about Arabic but I've read that it's close (some say even the same language) as Derja, Tunisian dialect of Arabic. Reading the Wikipedia examples of Tunisian Arabic it is EXTREMELY similar. However Maltese is not considered a dialect of Arabic but it is a descendant of Sicilian Arabic. I think this is due to societal and political reasons. Also Maltese is an official language of the EU.
