The Irish Film and Television Academy selected O Cofaigh's thriller for the Foreign Language list for the 87th annual Academy Awards of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences last week.
"Getting on the Oscar's long list is hugely important," O Cofaigh said. "For those of us who are connected to the language it is important to present it as a living thing.
"It also changes Irish people's attitude to the language. They don't see it as something a couple of old fellas in a pub drinking Guinness speak.
"It is something that can travel and resonate."
The film was mostly shot in Connemara by cinematographer Cian de Buitléar. It premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh earlier this year and will be screened as a TV series on TG4 from October 23.
Translated as The Gift, O Cofaigh has described the film as "Celtic Noir", drawing inspiration from Nordic Noir cinematography but with "an Irish sense of humour".
Set against the backdrop of the Connemara coast, the thriller tells the story of a local independent lifeboat crew who become caught up in the violent world of narcotics.
The Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Science (AMPAS) will announce the five finalists for best foreign language film on January 12, 2015. The Academy Awards take place in Hollywood on February 22.source |
