Has any one any experience and recommendations for German Graded Readers? I am especially interested in books that are suitable for A1 and A2 level speakers.

I have used this series:

The books usually consist of a CD and a graded book - The green banded books = A1, blue
= A2 and yellow = B1.

Langenscheidt has four series of Deutsch als Fremdsprache books, most of which are available with or without a mini-CD. I have one in the Felix & Theo series, and one in the Klara & Theo series. The Felix & Theo series is clearly more geared towards adult learners, but both are pretty good.

Thanks. What level are they aimed at? A2? B1?

They rate the books by the hours of study completed, e.g. 50 hours, 100 hours or 150 hours, but in effect they range from A1 to A2. There is one book in the Felix & Theo series which has been incorporated into a "Trainingslektüre Zertifikat Deutsch B1". In addition to the book and CD, they have a set of related PDFs which can be downloaded for free.

Check out books by Andre Klein. He writes a whole series of German readers and I like them a lot. I own Cafe in Berlin and Die Dritte Hand and I felt they definitely helped my reading and my vocabulary; once I go full steam with my German again I will buy all of his other books, they're cheap too.

I'm not great on gauging the CEFR levels but I would say all of the ones I have seen are definitely in the range of A1-A2 and I bet he has some higher level stuff too.

Also, if you can get your hands on a tablet/Kindle (if you don't already), purchase the books for Kindle; you can simply click on the words you don't know and it gives you the translation (PatrickWilkin enlightened me to this and it works great). I believe you can get a cheap Kindle for around $70, maybe less now.

I just noticed that the cheap Kindle's with a cursor -- which I think are much better than touchscreens if you want to look up a lot of words -- have disappeared from the Amazon.de. You can still get them on Ebay, but I have no idea for how long. I'm thinking of buying a spare for 40 Euros now as I really find this model helpful.
