We should probably differentiate between monolingual and native. They're really not the same thing when it comes to courses.
As far as a single English-based course being sufficient prior to moving on to monolingual courses go, it was sufficient for me. but it wasn't an audio-only course so I got some grammar explanations, and maybe more importantly, my native language is English.

Yes, my mistake! I should have edited it. It wasn't sufficient for me to move from L2 courses to native materials, though. I had to go through a few L2-based courses then monolingual courses and I started native materials while using monolingual courses.

@day1: I believe you should make good use of the Norwegian audio available in all those textbooks. Just skip the explanations when they become redundant, but keep working with the texts because they provide useful information. They don't seem much 'dumbed down' for a learner, especially the ones from Stein på Stein and Her på Berget.
Also, don't forget Norwegianpod101, especially the Advanced Audioblog.
What really motivated me was listening-reading from one of my favorite authors, Jostein Gaarder. Even if you don't have the Norwegian text, you can still play the audiobook in Norwegian and read in English. You may not like fiction that much, but given that Norwegian will be easy for you, you can learn more in a string and also train your listening. After all, the essence of L-R is making intermediate and advanced Assimils on your own.
Then there are the series, which you can use double subtitles for, for instance. I can't see any less motivation than Dag, Halvbroren, Nattskiftet and even Himmelblå or Hjem or Hellfjord.

I don't recommend Jostein Gaarder for his antisemitism.

What are we talking about? I was discussing the technique and mentioned the book I used, but one is free to
choose. If you can't refrain from delving into politics or sociolinguistics as has been the case, please find
another place.

I feel the same way. I do not think anyone would recommend literature written by a
known
racist or rapist. I do not see why antisemitism should be more socially acceptable.
That is not politics, that is respect for the dignity of minorities. I will never read
a
word written by that man again.
Do any of you know about any good online beginner courses in Norwegian by the way? I
was asked
for that by a friend who wants to learn Norwegian, and for obvious reasons, language
learning material for Norwegian, is not to be found on my shelf.
