I recently acquired
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hugos-German-Simplified-Various/dp/1 409724395
These books are photographic reprints of the originals (I think from the early 1900s).
Printing quality:
It is quite good, but it shows that it is a photographic reprint.
Book collection:
The volume seems to be a collection of several volumes:
1. Hugo Grammar Simplified
2. Key to Hugo Grammar Simplified
3. German Conversation Simplified
4. German Composition Simplified
1. Hugo Grammar Simplified
Contains usual grammar, and a whole bunch of English->german exercises.
Each lesson also contains some "German Conversational sentences" in German, with some helpful notes, but no full translations (even in the key). These conversational sentences are in the german frankfurter script.
2. Key to Hugo Grammar Simplified
Key to exercises of 1. Latin script.
3.German Conversation Simplified
A parallel "reader" of German sentences. German in frankfurter script.
4. German Composition Simplified
A sketch of a scenario is given, which must be translated into German.
The German solutions are provided, in frankfurter script.
Quite densely packed, with not much whitespace (unlike modern books). Natürlich, it has artifacts of old German, z.B., "ich muss" is "ich musz".
