Hi everybody,

I have been thinking about doing an app for language practice with native speakers using
video chat.

The basic idea is that you enter your native language and the language you want to practice
and you are matched with someone based on these. Then you can videochat or just use voice
to practice with them.

I'm thinking about some way to rate the other user after chatting with them, also you could
save your favorite ones to chat continue practicing with them some other day.

What would you like to see in an app like this?

There is an app like that already called Tandem. I think it has most of those features, maybe not voice only
chat, but the others. I don't mean to discourage you or anything. I just don't know what could be added to
make a better app. I suggest you give it a try and see what kind of ideas it gives you.

I have checked and it seems like it's only for iPhone. This is a good thing because I'm
targeting Android devices first.

I'm investigating other apps for ideas, but really the ideas I value the most are of the
people that are learning languages (like the folks in this forum).

Thanks Brun for taking the time to answer! :)

OK. Well, Tandem lets you have in-app voice chats and text chats and you can find people by language and
country. What I would like to see improved is that people's languages are only listed as "speaks" or "learns"
and I would like to know which languages are a person's native languages and also what level they have in
the other languages. Something like the progress bars in ITalki would be nice. I would also like to search for
partners by keywords so I could find someone with similar interests. Tandem does let you control who can
see your profile to some extent. For example, some women only want other women to be able to find them.
That's a good feature.

I wish Conversation Exchange and iTalki had this feature, to help weed out the time-wasters! It would be open to abuse though, like people giving bad ratings just because they didn't really "click" with the person or they had differences in opinions etc. But if you could name and shame users for specific things like not turning up at the appointed time for a Skype chat without warning or apology, it could be helpful.

In terms of language exchange apps, I've heard good things about HelloTalk, but not tried it yet. There are already lots of sites out there for language exchanges, so I don't understand why people keep making more and more new ones and dividing the user base more and more, unless they have something new and different to offer. As I say, the rating system idea appeals to me and I'm not sure if any of the current ones have it.

Tandem lets you make a comment about the user after you chat with them.

You are right about people giving bad ratings for "fun", it's a real problem that I'm
seeing in other apps.

Maybe in cases like this it would be nice to just have positive ratings and give priority
for matching based on these.

And for indecent behaviour (sadly a problem when you allow people sending image/video) a
report button that sends an alert with a screenshot of that moment to the admin. Then the
admin would ban that user.

I have to think more about this.

I guess everybody think they have the million $ idea (me included) :-)

I would like to make something on the simple side to begin with and improve it day by day
following people's suggestions.

On the other hand think what would have happened if Mark Zuckerberg hadn't created Facebook
because MySpace already existed at that time...

Thanks all for your thoughts, really appreciated!

Are you envisioning this as a language tandem version of chat roulette? If so that could end very very
badly even with the most stringent moderating.
