I've been learning french for a while since I've got a french girlfriend and I like talking to her in her native language.I only have a problem with french : many people say that they find it gay.
I don't really understand why they think it sounds gay but I would like to think that it doesn't. I know this may be silly but what do you think about this? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

First time I went to the US (20 years ago)..speaking french was my main line to get girlfriends and improve my english...

I've often found that when people (almost always guys) say stuff is 'gay', it's usually just a reflection of their insecurities (or immaturities). You aren't learning French to impress them, so it doesn't have to matter what they think.

Those "many people" are morons. French is the world's most romantic language, and one of the coolest and most cultured.
Off-topic: one of the things I love about Japan is that being cultured, taking care of your body, dressing nicely, speaking other languages, etc. are not considered 'gay'. Certain parts of North America seem to think so, and it's a serious cultural sickness. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I'm in North America, and I have to agree with what Captain Haddock and Lengua. There's nothing gay about a man learning a language to speak it with his girlfriend.
One thing I noticed when I began traveling was that many very heterosexual European men dressed with a seemingly unconscious sense of style or flair. They were generally more educated about history, art, music of all sorts and usually spoke at least three languages. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I agree with lengua and Captain Haddock (although I think that other languages are "cooler").
