I would like to point out my post again, i.e. there are no sufficient materials for learning dialects in depth, so if a student aims for more than basic tourist knowledge, eg. bargaining, MSA is the only choice. Many advanced students of Arabic agree on the fact that aquisition of dialects after having rather difficult MSA under the belt is very easy.
Materials, that are usually recommended for MSA:
Alif Baa
Al-Kitaab fii Ta callum al-cArabiyya
LĀ“Arabe sans peine (1975) -
Standard Arabic: An Elementary-Intermediate Course (Cambridge Press)

So, is MT not worth the effort in this case then since the consensus appears to be learn MSA?

I prefer FSI style courses, and it appears they do not have MSA as a choice. My primary goal of possibly learning Arabic, Mandarin, etc. is to possibly get into the FBI, NSA, etc. In this case I am not sure it matters which form of Arabic you learn. Forgive my ignorance, but I have not seen any popular methods for learning MSA.
