This is a good topic. I was in a similar position as you about 2 years ago.
I have come to realize that the law of diminishing returns really kicks in after awhile. I had tried to study (and cram in) advanced vocabulary (such as different atejis, proverbs and onomatopoeias) before I realized that I wasn't getting the return that I wanted for the amount of time I was spending doing that. I was not living in Japan and really had no plans of living there in the near future. I figured that I would just read some Japanese occasionally so to maintain my current level of Japanese, and would learn all those advanced Kanjis if and when the situation presents itself. Afterall when you are in Sweden and there's not a single Japanese person in sight, would you really expect yourself to be able to remember obscure Kanjis (and their readings) when you don't use/see them often?
