I recently began to learn Spanish, and as part of my research found this site. Over the past few days I have read numerous threads regarding language learning, and have decided on a plan of action. To help motivate me, I thought it would be a great idea to begin logging my progress in the coming months. Thank you everyone for your advice and ideas throughout this forum.
Background: I have some Spanish speaking background as I took a couple years of Spanish in high school (around 8 years ago) and my mother's native language is Spanish. I want to learn for a variety of reasons including gaining the ability to speak to my Spanish speaking relatives and also to be able to maintain conversation while vacationing in Spanish speaking countries. Finally, living in the Southwest US, knowing Spanish will be a huge benefit in the business world.
Plan: This plan is based on a numerous threads I have read. I know some of the resources are not well liked by some, but this plan is based on the resources available to me (library etc..). I expect this to be a very long term plan and of course adjustments and changes will likely be made as I learn more about available resources and my Spanish knowledge increases. Regarding timing, my goal is six hours a week of study (one hour a day for six days). Anything in addition would be excellent as well.
INTRO RESOURCES
1.) Michel Thomas deluxe course
2.) Pimsleur Levels 1-3
3.) Michel Thomas Advanced
-I will also being working through some Rosetta Stone exercises available via our public library
INTERMEDIATE RESOURCES
1.) Learning Spanish Like Crazy 1 & 2
2.) Platiquemos
IMMERSION (will take part throughout my formal coursework)
1.) Conversations with my mother and other Spanish speaking natives
2.) Spanish media (podcasts, newspapers, magazines)
3.) Spanish music
4.) Spanish television
Please leave any thoughts and comments! Thanks!!

In the interest of getting this log started, I will report on what I completed yesterday, my first real day of study.
-Michel Thomas Disc 1, up to part 8: While the students can be a bit annoying, I do enjoy this course thus far. It seems like it will provide me with a great introduction to give into deeper programs and resources down the road.
-Rosetta Stone Part 1, Unit 1/Lesson 1: Since it is available, I decided to check out Rosetta Stone. My limited exposure makes me feel it is likely not worth the $500+, but as a library resource it should be beneficial from the perspective of building a vocabulary.
-Notecards: I downloaded Anki for use on my Palm. I have begun setting up a database for vocabulary terms learned in Rosetta Stone and plan on reviewing those cards during breaks and free time at work during the week.
Total Study Time: 2.5 hours (not bad for a first day)

Hey, just wanted to say good luck from another monolingual learning Spanish! Since you already have such a background and conversation oppertunities, you'll probably progress in no time.
Le deseo muchisimo excito! :)

-Michel Thomas Disc 1 review (up to part 8): I decided to relisten to the first eight parts of disc 1. It definitely made more sense the second time around. The hard part about this method is sticking to the rules of no note taking or memorization, but it seems to be working some what. I hope to finish disc 1 and maybe part of disc 2 tomorrow.
-Rosetta Stone Part 1, Unit 1/Lesson 2: I went ahead and went through the next section. As expected there are more vocabulary words added in on top of what I learned yesterday.
-Notecards: I created a couple databases for what I am working on in Anki (MT and Rosetta Stone). I then loaded them onto my Palm so I can begin reviewing flashcards. I am sticking to not reviewing those cards for MT for now, so I am focusing on learning the vocab I am picking up from Rosetta Stone.
I think I will hold off on Pimsleur until I complete MT (at least the basic).
Study Time: 2.5 hours

Thank you! With work during the week there is no way I can keep up those times, but we'll see what happens. I am hoping to utilize my 2 hours of commuting a day for MT and Pimsleur.

I know what you mean. I'll have the same problem when I'll be back at my university. Still 2 hours is great time, I wish I was spending so much time on languages, I'm just too lazy.

-Michel Thomas Disc 1 review and half of disc 2: I finished my review of disc 1 and did a first time listen of half of disc 2. I plan on having disc 2 completed and reviewed tomorrow.
-Rosetta Stone Part 1, Unit 1/Lesson 3: The amount of time spent on RS today was drastically reduced over the last couple days. I am quickly realizing the critisms mentioned on this board about the program very quickly. While it is a good tool for vocabulary and some sentence structure, a good 10-15 minutes per lesson with some repetition is all that is needed. I do plan on going in and doing some of the writing lessons later.
-Notecards: I added words for what I have learned over the past few days. I also reviewed some cards at work during breaks.
Study Time: 2 hours
