Double consonants in Korean are really just a matter of 'closing' your throat, tightening the muscles around the larynx seems to work for me, once you can tell the difference when you do it you'll start to be able to tell the difference when listening too. I'm not saying it's easy but you can get to grips with these, it just takes time.
Korean is really very difficult overall though, I think you need a strong motivation to keep at it. In my case, being married to a Korean plus innate stubbornness is only just enough to keep me at it and after 4 years I'm still pretty bad ( though much better than the other westerners I know who have tried are ).
