Do most native English speakers in Canada speak French?

Definitely not. We take a mandatory 4 years of French in public school (grades 6-9)

I started in grade 4. It was fun then, because we got to watch TV shows in French (Telefrancais, the one with talking pineapple....anyone?). Then it became very grammar-y. Now it's fun again.

Here in Ottawa, core French (about 40 min per day) starts in grade 1. I also have fond memories of Ananas.

our variant is statisticly no more different than the southern or eastern dialects of France.

I'm not sure what you mean by this quote. Could you elaborate please? What are these "statistics" you speak of?

I watch continental French TV since I was born, and I have never -ever- seen a Québécois speaking with subtitles.

Is this French TV aimed at a Quebecois audience so perhaps they don't need subtitles? Or maybe a news program where they speak clearer journalistic French? It wasn't often that I heard Quebecois French on French TV, but when I did hear it from the show "Un gars, une fille", it was definitely all subtitled, and for good reason if you ask me.

Off topic, but here's a funny take on this theme (fairly un-PC)... Subtitled Interview
