After six months of intensive Mandarin study, I feel I can now read without much pain, although quite slowly. I find it the best way to review characters, and since I am sick of learning lists of words, it is also a great way to learn vocabulary in context. That's exactly the method I used when I was learning Russian: I used to buy and read all those simple and quite addicting detective novels.

So what is there to read in Mandarin, freely available on the net, and not too difficult? I am looking for interesting, simple novels and texts of Chinese and foreign literature.

小王子 (The little prince).
There's a thread here somewhere which links to it (and has audio recordings), but google will do too. That's the best one for starters, imho.
If you have access to Chinese books, you may also want to try to find 哆啦A梦 (Doraemon). They're very simple and quite enjoable.

Thanks Pyx, I will definitely read 小王子. I haven't heard of 哆啦A梦, but I will take a look if I can find them.

That's it? Isn't there anything more worth reading in Mandarin?

Why don't you first read XWZ, and then look for more? ;)
There is more of course, but I'm not sure which level you're at. And what you're interested in.
Since you mentioned detective novels, I can tell you that I am, for example, at the moment reading 福尔摩斯 = Sherlock Holmes, which is very good. It's relatively hard to read, though.
How many characters and words do you know?
