I've decided that it's time to devote a bit more time and love to my Russian, and hopefully keeping a log might kick it into gear. I've been studying – in the loosest sense – for about a year, and not really achieved a great deal. My attention span is incredibly short, and I have a severe tendency to procrastinate: language learning certainly isn't the only thing affected.
Right now, I'd say my speaking, listening and writing skills are poor; reading and grammar are a little better. I'd estimate my vocabulary at 1500 words, which I'm fairly happy with (consistently using an SRS (Anki) has probably helped there), but I find that I still can't read anything beyond the most trivial texts, which really don't hold any interest. On the plus side, I do have a tutor (one hour a week), so at least I get some opportunity to practise speaking with a native.
My immediate goal is just to try and get into the habit of actually sitting down and studying for more than 5 minutes at a time, and to solidify what I already know. For example, I've covered all the noun/adjective case endings, but am constantly forgetting them; I know a whole slew of useful verbs, but can never remember what case they should be used with. It's certainly not a priority, but it'd be nice to keep building vocabulary: granted, it's pretty mindless work, but I find the input into Anki and recall sessions can be very easily split into small chunks.
Resources? A half dozen books, the Internet.
Goal? Well, short term, I'm going to back to the start of The New Penguin Russian Course, plus some practise using Schaum's Russian Grammar, to try and get my grammar in order. I'm a little stuck on the listening and reading components: I've read lots of posts about LR, but all the complete text/audio combinations I've come across are a bit too complicated for me. Might have a look around, see if I can find anything suitable. I'll probably try and listen to some Internet Radio to try and get accustomed to the speed of speech. I think I'll not worry too much about writing and speaking right now; can always have a rethink in a few months.
Longer term, I'd like to reach a point where I can take a holiday to Russia and get around fairly comfortably without having to resort to English. By year end, optimistically ..
Anyway, will try and keep this updated: committing myself to that should at least make me do a little more :)
