Last night I tried reading through The Little Prince while listening. This approach is far slower than just memorizing kanji, but it makes me feel like I'm making more progress with each painfully slow sentence I get through.
I also just bought "Read Real Japanese" - a book of essays that says it intends to give the newbie a graceful entry into reading Japanese written by real people - not just textbook or classroom style Japanese you hear in some dialogues.
Kanji continues, but slower. I'm trying to find better stories for the kanji I've forgotten.
