Nice comment, that. *eyes popping* How can you make such sweeping statements?

This is rhetorical question, I don't need a reply, since I've no desire to start political debates. If that's your opinion, you're entitled to it and for all I know you might be right. I just think it's wrong to make such generalizations.

It's a pity that a beautiful country has such harsh fame due to a bunch of thugs...the funniest thing is that Russia was a potential enemy of nazis 60 years ago and some crooks have come up with that idea of shaving their heads and then beat up harmless and hardworking foreigners....if those nazis really love Russia, why don't they get rid of the real thugs who are staining the country's image?...some of them who dress suits....

However, that situation is found everywhere, many countries are on the mainstream regarding nazi, anti-gay groups, etc....including Brazil...also the Brazilian Government, purely leftist, is doing everything to bring up hatred amongst many group and favouring some minorities and even standing up for racism mostly at universities.

As for the language itself, I hope to study in a few years....unless any Russian decides to come to Brazil to start a new life and one of his activities is work as a private teacher.

Point of fact, I have heard almost the exact same descriptions you put forth to describe the populace of both the UK and the US.

Do you think those opinions hold much stock?

As a matter of fact I do. The UK is far more liberal, but when I arrived here it was much to my surprise to discover there are plenty of homophobic, and generally xenophobic, people even in this most liberal part of the world. So I can't imagine how tough it must be Russia, if the bad things are clearly visible from outside of the country and a number of human rights organizations are in outrage.

And just to make it clear, I am not British and not even western European. It is simply an objective judgment that I make, on the basis of what information I have. If that information is distorted, then please excuse me. If my opinion is too simplistic for your tastes, then blame it on the media, but I am definitely NOT trying to over-generalize.

Sometimes the bad image is well deserved... it is true that what you hear on the news is not 100% to be trusted but we can't just say "Oh, well it's just the news, I don't trust a single word of what they say". I also like the language very much, but the state of the country spoils the fun for me.

If that's the case it's a shame. However, something tells me that a modest (by which I
mean the opposite of spectacular, as opposed to humility), multiracial, tourist-sy
country such as Brazil is a much better place for minorities than any of the world's
more insular and retrospective countries.

Also, I'd just like to note that bigotry isn't a trademark of either rightists or
leftists.

"Are you learning Russian for the love of Moscow or St. Petersburg, the famous church or palace architecture, Siberia, the Vodka or Caviar, Dostovesky, Racchamminov/Tchaikovsky, rockets? "

All of the above, definitely Siberia and rockets, and Solyenitsine (never read any Dostoevski, in fact am waiting to know Russian to do so). And I just like the sound of it, in songs it just sounds so nostalgic and tragic and... I don't know. Russian speakers, do I sound ridiculous saying that? Also, it's European but different enough to be exotic. And covers a very large geographic area.

"Imagine reading Russian classics in original language. The words in
other languages cannot describe the feelings which the Russian language portrays."

My primary reason for learning it, although since I started I discovered a number of other ones

"And last but not least, I have never met any other nation so grateful to learn their
language. Especially the western Russian speakers excites them."

I hear that a lot on this forum, so it must be true! Can't wait to meet a Russian person to confirm it. :(

Sounds like that.
But why don't let people speak out the reasons why one should not to learn Russian? Looks like some forum members have found such facts useful for themselves. So, all in all I'm against closing the thread.
