Hey folks,

I am interested in finding broadcasts from Germany of national/international news, politics, etc. However one major caveat...I need English subtitles. It is probably way too early for me to start listening to these (only studying for 3 weeks), but am quite interested.

arkady, I don't think it's too early! I've already started listening a little (although admittedly not too much - I'd like to listen more but my time is a little sparse at the moment).

You won't understand it, but it will give you a good feel for how the language sounds etc which is very useful IMHO.

I'm not sure about the types of visual material you're after... I've only used DVDs so far - and they have German voice & subtitles.

Thanks for the ecouragement, I suppose I can just watch some movies with subtitles. Problem is, when I watch the movie I focus on reading the content so that I can understand what the hell I am watching.

I get around that by listening to the German and reading Hungarian subtitles, because at least then I'm practicing both languages! LOL

I wouldn't have subtitles in your native language right now because as you say, you'll just rely on them.

At this stage of my learning, if I don't do as I mentioned above with Hungarian titles, I just have it playing in the background (with German subtitles) and look at it occasionally. I prefer to do this than to revert back to using English subtitles.

You can get them on amazon.de

Look for "Untertitel: Deutsch" under Produktinformation

Be aware that they are region-2 dvds, though. Your dvd player may not play them. I watch them on my computer.

Try SCOLA.org, a not-for-profit organisation that broadcasts news clips from all sorts of languages with video, audio, text, and translated text.
