Hello,

I am currently studying Chinese (Mandarin). I have found this excellent video for
learning Chinese pinyin, which I would like to share.

However, I am having a bit of trouble translating the intro to the video, before they
start saying the consonants (ie what the small girl is saying).
I would be very grateful if anybody could translate this for me. If possible, the
Pinyin
with tones would be nice, along with the written Chinese translation as well.
A break down of how the sentences are put together would also be very welcomed.

Many thanks both for your time and effort.

Here is the link to the video:-

I'm getting this much:
Quote:
      小朋友,现在让我 们来 学习 汉语 拼音字母。我 们先读声母
     (语母?)和(整体认读?)音 节。 然后 接着学习(语 ?))的四声。请大家跟着我一起念。  &nb sp;

But for the life of me, I can't figure out what she's saying before 音节. And what's that yu4mu3 in there?

PS: I just had the glorious idea of looking up "vowel": 韵母 = yun4mu3! Aaah! Okay, let's see what that'll give us..

Quote:

But I still have no idea about that part in the middle. I suppose it means that we're gonna read some full syllables, so it should be 整体ren4读, but what ren4 is that. Would somebody please enlighten me? :)

After some googling and baidu-ing, it seems that 整体认读音节 is a fixed expression referring to the pinyin syllables "zhi chi shi ri zi ci si yi wu yu ye yue yin yun yuan ying". I don't know though what's special about them, I'd be very thankful if anybody could explain that to me.
So, as I understand it then, the girl says:
Quote:
小朋友,现在让我们来学习汉语拼音字母。我 们先读声母,韵母和整体认读音节。然后接着 学习韵母的四声。请大家跟着我一起念。

which is in pinyin:
Quote:
Xiǎopéngyou,xiànzài ràng wǒmen lái xuéxí Hànyǔ Pīnyīn Zìmǔ. Wǒmen xiān dú shēngmǔ,yùnmǔ hé zhěngtǐrèndúyīnjié. Ránhòu jiēzhe xuéxí yùnmǔ de sì-shēng. Qǐng dàjiā gēnzhe wǒ yīqǐ niàn.
but I'm not sure how to parse that funny word. Again, could somebody explain how it is meant?

In English, that would be
Quote:

Dear kids, now we'll learn the Hanyu pinyin letters. We'll first read the initials, finals, and whatever-the-heck-that-is, then we'll continue learning the finals four tones. Please everybody read with me.

PS: I'm getting sort of sick of answering myself, but I just saw somewhere that the 整体认读音节 syllables are syllables that can't be broken apart into initial and final. That makes sense. Now I just need somebody to to explain to me the word 整体认读音节 itself, and I'll be happy :)

整体 = totality
认读 = 认 (recognize) + 读 (read out = pronounce)
音节 = syllable of course

the syllables to be pronounced in toto

Aww, come on, minu273's post gets two votes, and mine don't even get one? ;P

Anyways, minus, I still don't get what the 认 does in there. Why isn't it 整体读音节 for example? That's still "the syllables to be pronounced in toto", or isn't it?

Because two-syllable constituents are preferred in compound words. So it's equivalent to say 整体拼读音节, 整体发音音节 etc, but not 整体读音节.
