I can vaguely remember that there is a difference between "United Kingdom" and "Great Britain", but I don't know it anymore. Could anybody explain this to me, please?

Great Britain is the largest island of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Just to clarify, there is no country called Southern Ireland, it’s The Republic of Ireland or just Ireland.

Also the term “British Isles” is no longer politically correct and is actively discouraged by the Irish government.

I just call it England :\ I don't care if I offend people, because if you're offended by that you're way too sensitive. And you know what I mean anyway, and that's the point of language, right, effectively communicating ideas, politically correct or not.

The United Kingdom is not a term widely used in most parts of the U.S. There is an old story of a salesman who called at an office looking for the boss. The secretary said "I am sorry but he went to the United Kingdom." The salesman frowned, nodded sadly, and asked "Is it too late to send flowers."
